Day 3: You Are Not Alone

One of the first things I did on 1 January, 2018 – when I resolved to change my relationship with alcohol – was sign up for an account on Reddit so I could join r/stopdrinking.

I’d read about the community in an article in The Guardian and I knew that the members there would help me confront my demons head-on.

I knew I couldn’t undertake the journey alone. I also knew my chances of success would be considerably improved if I was a part of a community of like-minded people.

My profession – as a designer working on the web – has brought me into contact with a multitude of communities. Many toxic. Without question, the kindest community I have ever been a part of has been r/stopdrinking.

It’s an incredibly supportive forum and, even if you’re not struggling, I’d strongly suggest joining it.

I couldn’t have made it as far as I have to date without everyone’s support there. Through the highs and the lows, the support that the members of r/stopdrinking have offered me – and countless others – has been tremendous.

I truly, truly appreciate it and I’ll always owe a huge debt of gratitude to that community.

It’s important to realise: You are not alone. Your chances of success will be considerably greater if you’re a part of something bigger.

If you’re struggling, reach out for help. There will be someone out there who has been where you’ve been and that someone will want to help you.

You only need to ask.

Home.

Stay positive and, as we say at r/stopdrinking: I will not drink with you today.
